Winter Watering For Colorado Landscapes

There a many reminders in the media to winter water. Questions still come to me about how and when to do it.

First, understand the latest precipitation conditions and the temperatures recently. If the fall has been dry and warm watering is beneficial. If there is snow covering the ground or the snowfall has been significant then watering is not a priority.

Dry, warm, windy conditions with no snow cover are key indicators to go ahead with winter watering. Sunny exposed turf areas can benefit but shady frozen areas are not in need.

Trees in these sunny areas of turf can benefit with the turf watering. Recently planted trees and shrubs will also benefit from occasional watering in the planting area.

Water only on open ground in temperatures above 40 and allow time for water to soak in.
